The program was founded and has run continuously since 1968 at Phillips Exeter Academy
Students are chosen to participate in the program through a vigorous and competitive screening process.
Students are expected to work full-time (40 hours a week), five days a week.
Start and end dates for 2023 are March 20 and May 26.
Interns are provided with all necessary living expenses and housing while they are working in DC.
They reside at the Capitol Hill Hotel just a few blocks from Congress during the term.
Program Director Bill Jordan resides in the hotel and enforces their 9:30 nightly check-in time.
Students attend weekly seminars with alumni who work in DC, including a session in the first week with a Capitol staffer who goes over the basics of working in a Congressional office.
The director is available throughout the spring to consult with the host office's intern coordinator should any issues arise.
In the spring of 2022, our students worked in the offices of Reps. Yvette Clarke, Stacey E. Plaskett, Carolyn Maloney, Seth Moulton, Ann Kuster, Michael Doyle, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen. In the past they’ve worked for Senators Thom Tillis, Mark Warner, Dan Coates, Maria Cantwell, Hillary Clinton, Jacob Jarvis, and Barack Obama, to name a few.
