Research Question

As you work on a research paper, try to fill in the blanks in the following statement. This will help you conceptualize your topic: 

I am studying_________[1], so I can find out _____________[2], so whoever reads the essay will have a better understanding of _____________[3].                     

1. The very specific thing you’re studying, including the primary sources and the dates within which they fall.

2. The thing you do not know, but will find out by doing the research—reading the sources. (Hint: if you find yourself writing the word "impact" or "effect," hist the delete key immediately!

3. The larger historical theme or context; here you show why the research is important.
